PRESS RELEASE -

Theatre UAF will present “The Ash Girl,” written by Timberlake Wertenbaker, a contemporary retelling of Cinderella, in the Salisbury Theatre, April 17-26, 2015.

The play begins in an old house where Ashgirl lives huddled deep in the protection of an ashy hearth. With her mother dead and her father away, she lives with her clueless stepmother and cruel stepsisters. When the invitation to the ball arrives from the prince, Ashgirl finds the strength to go with the help of her friends, some of whom come from unexpected places. This retelling of the classic Cinderella fairy tale is “like a mix of C.S. Lewis and Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods:’ an eclectic fairy tale anthology.” (“The Guardian,” London). The production will feature both helpful and sinful characters, magic spells, fantastic costumes, and moving video projections.

Graduating senior Nicole Cowans will play the title role and is developing her senior performance thesis based on her work this production. Nicole previously played Diwata in “Speech & Debate,” was an ensemble member in “Nickel and Dimed,” and played the saucy maid Dorine in “Tartuffe.” Her thesis research examines the psychology behind the fairytale story. She will be attending the top-ten MFA acting program at the University of California Irvine in the fall.

Other graduating seniors in this production are Amelia Cooper (last seen in “The Flu Season”), Marley Horner (who played Inspector Goole in the fall production of “An Inspector Calls”), Melissa Buchta (who will attend Portland Conservatory in the fall), and Sambit Misra (attending the University of Iowa MFA acting program in the fall). The cast is rounded out with both student and community actors ranging in age from 8-56.

The production will be directed by Brian Cook and is his fourth production in the two years he’s been a faculty member at Theatre UAF. Professor of Acting Carrie Baker will return to the Theatre UAF stage for the first time since “Vinegar Tom,” playing the character Sadness.

“The Ash Girl” is presented in the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre in the Fine Arts Complex on the UAF Campus.
